When to Use Equivalents

Finding equivalent exposures gives you creative flexibility:

  • Stop motion: Need faster shutter but same exposure? Raise ISO and open aperture or use faster shutter
  • Reduce noise: Prefer clean images? Use base ISO and slower shutter or wider aperture
  • Control depth of field: Want shallower DOF? Keep the same exposure but use wider aperture with higher ISO and faster shutter
